ST. JOHN’S, Newfoundland and Labrador — The business community across Newfoundland and Labrador is mourning the profound loss of Frank Howard, President and Founder of Capital Auto Group, who passed away on December 4, 2025, after a courageous and dignified battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family in his final moments.
For more than half a century, Howard was a towering figure in the province’s automotive and business sectors. What began as one modest dealership grew, through his relentless drive and steadfast leadership, into Capital Auto Group — now a network of over 500 employees and 10 automotive brands. His vision extended further with the creation of The Howard Group, guiding a significant real estate portfolio that helped shape the commercial landscape of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Colleagues and industry leaders describe Frank as a once-in-a-generation entrepreneur — a man whose integrity, ambition, and sense of responsibility set a standard few could match. His achievements earned him some of the nation’s highest recognitions, including the CADA Laureate Award for Ambassadorship and his recent induction into the JANL Business Hall of Fame. Yet those closest to him say he never led for accolades — he led to make things better.
Beyond the boardroom, Frank Howard was known for his boundless generosity. Believing deeply in giving back to the community that helped him thrive, he quietly and consistently supported organizations such as the Health Care Foundation, Daffodil Place, Janeway Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House, The Gathering Place, and many more. His philanthropic legacy will continue to lift countless individuals and families for years to come.
Above all, Frank was a family man. His wife, Annette, was the center of his world, and he took immense pride in the lives and accomplishments of his children — Jon (Kristy), Jordan, Mike (Maria), and Nick (Sukriti) — along with his treasured grandchildren Logan, Madden, Molly, and Roman. Those who knew him say his happiest days were spent surrounded by the people he loved most.
The Howard family extends their deep gratitude to friends, extended family, and the healthcare teams at the Health Sciences Centre and The Ottawa Hospital for their compassion and support. In keeping with Frank’s wishes, there will be no wake or funeral. Details of a celebration of life will be announced in the coming days.
His legacy — of leadership, generosity, and unwavering devotion to family — will forever remain woven into the fabric of Newfoundland and Labrador.
